Son’s obit for ‘plus-sized’ mom who ‘lied a lot’ goes viral

“A plus-sized Jewish lady redneck died in El Paso on Saturday,” begins the obituary for Renay Mandel Corren. It was published Wednesday in the Fayetteville Observer.

The loving obit for the “singularly unique parent” was penned by the son of the deceased 84-year-old woman, who lives in New York City. It describes Corren as a traveler who was a “disrespectful, trash-reading, talking and watching woman” who’d called Texas, North Carolina and Florida home.

“At one point in the 1980′s, Renay was the 11th or 12th-ranked woman in cribbage in America, and while that could be a lie, it sounds great in print,” the obituary continues. “She also told us she came up with the name for Sunoco, and I choose to believe this, too. Yes, Renay lied a lot.”

It’s written that Corren didn’t cook or clean, but gambled and was irresponsible with money. She also liked to fish, tell dirty jokes and read dirty magazines, her son recalled.

“We thought Renay could not be killed,” the death notice claims. “God knows, people tried. A lot.”

The silly farewell letter to Corren further alleges she twice survived pneumonia and breast cancer, as well as numerous other challenges, including “a few” abortions — and supposedly— an affair with broadcasting icon Larry King, who died in January. The obit says Corren is survived by two pets and several children, including “her favorite son, the gay one who writes catty obituaries in his spare time, Andy Corren, of — obviously — New York City.”

He jokes that King may have been his dad.

“Bye, Mommy,” the obituary concludes. “We loved you to bits.”
