Someone Just Paid $261,000 for an Iconic 924

The era of the homologation special is long gone. Just one serious road car representing a racing car is on sale today, and that GR Yaris, with its relatively high production numbers and available creature comforts, is much closer to a road car than what passed for a special in days past. This Porsche Carrera GTS Clubsport, a limited production road car designed to allow Porsche to compete in FIA Group 4, makes no such compromises.

While it is not necessarily the top of the 924 line (that honor goes to its successor, the even quicker Carrera GTR), the Carrera GTS Clubsport is actually the most rare. The Carrera GT line, in total, involved just a few hundred cars. Of those, 59 were the more powerful GTS. Only 15 of those cars were given the Clubsport option, the specific Group 4-ready treatment that led directly to the car's racing form.

Given that the GTS Clubsport exists to build a racing car, the road car is predictably radical. Output is up to 280 hp, the brakes come from a 930, and, most strikingly, the interior has been ready to go racing professionally from the day the car was delivered. That treatment includes plastic sliding windows, a factory-installed roll cage, on-board fire suppressant, and racing seats in the style of those installed in the fire-breathing 935.

This particular Carrera GTS Clubsport is in the museum-quality condition that one would expect from a car that was going to be collectible from the day it was built. Unfortunately, that means it has been driven just 500 miles in its 40-year life. The car was sold on Bring A Trailer for $261,000, a valuation so high that the number isn't likely to go up much further any time soon.

Bring a Trailer is also owned by Road & Track’s parent company, Hearst Autos.
