As the Miami Marlins begin a four-game series with the Washington Nationals on Friday, they made a quartet of roster moves and had a slew of updates on players currently sidelined.

Here are the latest updates on where everything stands.

Jorge Soler to the IL

The Marlins on Friday placed starting left fielder Jorge Soler on the 10-day injured list with bilateral pelvis inflammation. He was a late scratch from the Marlins’ lineup on Wednesday due to back discomfort.

“It comes and goes,” Soler said postgame Wednesday. “Sometimes it bothers me, sometimes it doesn’t.”

Marlins manager Don Mattingly on Friday said the injury “really got to the point where he couldn’t do the work that he needed to do to be sharp.”

“We had to get rid of it,” Mattingly added. “He needed some time off as far as his swing and things like that.”

Soler is now the fourth player the Marlins have placed on the injured list due to back-related issues. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. landed on the IL Wednesday with a right lower back strain. Brian Anderson returned to the roster Monday after missing close to a month with lower back spasms. Right-handed relief pitcher Anthony Bender has been on the IL since May 22 due to back stiffness.

“They’re not all the same,” Mattingly said. “Bender was more mid-upper back. Jazz’s was out of the blue. I think as an organization, our medical staff and training staff is like, ‘OK, what are we missing? Is it a coincidence or is it something that we’re doing or something that we’re not doing?’ ... You always have to ask yourself those questions when you have multiple injuries of the same thing.”

Miami Marlins’ Joey Wendle, right, slaps hands with Marlins third base coach Al Pedrique (13) as Wendle rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks during the first inning of a baseball game Wednesday, May 11, 2022, in Phoenix.

Joey Wendle returns

While the Marlins lost Soler, they returned one of their key versatile infielders in Joey Wendle, who was activated off the IL due to a right hamstring injury.

This was Wendle’s second time on the IL with a right hamstring injury and the third time it has caused him to miss games.

“It’s frustrating as a competitor,” said Wendle, who is hitting .284 with a .760 OPS in 29 games but has missed 42 total games because of his hamstring, including all 28 games in June because of this recent IL stint. “Everybody wants to be out there. You’re watching your team on a nightly basis go out there and compete without you. You want to be part of it. That’s why I’m here, to help us win baseball games. ... But part of being a professional athlete is understanding that when these things do happen, how are you going to bounce back? How are you going to react to it moving forward? That’s where we are now.”

Billy Hamilton up, Erik Gonzalez DFA’d

Finally on the roster move front, the Marlins selected the contract of veteran outfielder Billy Hamilton while designating for assignment infielder Erik Gonzalez.

Miami signed Hamilton to a minor-league deal on June 23 and, at least to start, primarily plan to use the 31-year-old off the bench as either a pinch-runner or a late-inning defensive replacement in the outfield. He could eventually get spot starts in center field, but Miami still views Jesus Sanchez as its primary center fielder.

So why did the Marlins choose to add Hamilton to the active roster instead of, say, top prospects Jerar Encarnacion or JJ Bleday?

It comes down to playing time.

The Marlins ideally want to play Jon Berti, Anderson and Wendle as close to every day as they can. With Chisholm and Soler out, that points to a configuration like the one Miami is fielding Friday: Wendle at second base, Anderson at third base and Berti in left field. Wendle can also play third base and shortstop, the latter when Miguel Rojas needs a day off.

This left little room for regular playing time for whichever outfielder took Soler’s spot on the roster.

Updates on players on IL

Jesus Luzardo threw a 20-pitch bullpen on Wednesday and reported no discomfort. He is scheduled for a side throwing session on Saturday.

Cody Poteet is starting a rehab assignment with Single A Jupiter on Friday.

Edward Cabrera threw a 16-pitch side session on Friday and has a bullpen scheduled for Monday.

Sixto Sanchez’s next bullpen scheduled for Wednesday.

Cole Sulser and Louis Head are scheduled to throw a bullpen session in Jupiter on Sunday.

Bender, Chisholm and Soler are rehabbing in Jupiter. Bender is not throwing at the moment.
