SOFTBALL: St. Paul scores 34 runs in doubleheader sweep

FREMONT — The St. Paul softball team put up big numbers in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday over host St. Joseph Central Catholic in a pair of non-league games in Fremont.

The Lady Flyers (5-10) opened with a 20-6 win in five innings that saw them total 20 hits, seven which went for extra bases.

Presley Stang finished 4 for 5 with a double, a home run, six RBIs and scored three times to lead the hit parade. Marlaina Sowers also went 4 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Klaire Hickey was 3 for 5 with a triple, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Morgan Baxter finished with two hits, including ga double, and an RBI, while Mara Lesch doubled, and both Molly Ridge and Sammy Lippert each finished with a hit and an RBI. Also for St. Paul, Josalyn Vazquez and Alaina Takacs each had two hits.

In the circle, Amelia Rospert allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks in the five innings.

In a 14-7 win in Game 2, Hickey was 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, while Stang was 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs and Lippert was 3 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs. Vazquez also had three hits, and Sowers added a solo home run.

Baxter earned the pitching win with four earned runs on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. She walked three and struck out three.

COLLINS — The Roughriders fell to 0-12 overall as the Panthers staved off their rally in the first game, then jumped out to a 6-0 lead in Saturday's second game of a non-league doubleheader.

In a 4-2 loss in Game 1, Sydnie Prince allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in seven innings. Jessa Riley and Grace Elkin each singled for the lone two hits for the 'Riders.

In Game 2, Riley was 2 for 3 and scored twice for Western, while Jocelyn Charville singled and had two RBIs. Prince and Elkin each added a single and an RBI.

GIBSONBURG — The Chargers split Saturday's non-league doubleheader with the host Bears to take a 10-4 record into next week.

In a 10-6 win in the opener, Mallory Perkins was 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to pace the Chargers. Kayla Mancuso was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Kira Appeman was 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs. Deana Blatnik also doubled and drove in two runs.

In the circle, Appeman allowed five earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks in seven innings of work.

In a 9-8 loss in Game 2, Deana Blatnik was 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs, while Perkins was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Appeman added two hits that included a double and scored twice.
