Softball Rangers get first two conference wins

Mar. 6—Coach Trish Robinson's Kilgore College softball Rangers picked up their first Region XIV Conference wins of the year against Lamar State-Port Arthur on Wednesday at Lumberton.

KC is 4-5-1 overall, after several games were canceled due to the icy weather, and are 2-2 in the Region XIV Conference.

This week's home games against Galveston College were canceled, too, due to rain, but the Rangers are scheduled to play a double-header Sunday at Galveston, starting at 1 p.m., and are back on the road Wednesday for a double-header at San Jacinto, in the Houston area, beginning at 2 p.m.

KC's next home games are a double-header against LSU-Eunice on Saturday, March 13, starting at 2.

KC 5, Lamar State 4: The Rangers snagged the lead with a three-run third inning, an RBI double by Maddie Brewer started it. KC then got an RBI single by Marissa Medina, and Adrienne Lewing followed that with an RBI single of her own, for a 3-0 KC lead.

Lamar State added a run in the bottom of the inning, and then KC extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth, when Lizzy Torres hit an RBI double and then to 5-1 in the seventh, on another RBI double by Brewer. Lamar State got a huge hit — a three-run home run by Kaitlyn Samarripa — in the bottom of the seventh, making it 5-4, but KC held on for the win.

The Rangers had 11 hits, including Brewer's two RBI doubles. Lewing went 3-for-4.

Jenna Lewis got the win, throwing all seven innings. She allowed four runs on seven hits, and struck out seven.

KC 18, Lamar State 7: It didn't appear to be nearly as close in the second game of the double-header — if you only look at the final score.

But the game was tied at 7-all in the top of the sixth inning, before Hannah Grumbles managed a 2-RBI double that gave KC the lead for good, at 9-7.

Lewing finished with four hits, including a home run in the first, and three singles.

Her first-inning home run was on a full-count 3-2 pitch.

Grumbles and Makayla Trevino each also had a home run. Medina and Calleigh King also each had multiple hits: KC had 18 total in the contest.

Macie McGibney got the win on the mound. She threw five innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, with three strikeouts. Medina finished the game, pitching the last two innings.

Samarripa took the loss for Lamar State, giving up eight runs on 10 hits in five and a third innings, with four strikeouts.
