SOFTBALL: Mapleton edges South Central

Apr. 14—ORANGE TWP. — The South Central softball team was edged by host Mapleton on Tuesday, 6-4, in a back-and-forth Firelands Conference game.

With the loss to the Mounties (7-4, 3-0), the Trojans fell to 4-5 and 2-1 in the FC.

Mapleton scored three runs in the first inning, but the Trojans tied it up with two runs in the top of the fifth, only to see the Mounties score twice in the bottom of the fifth.

South Central then pulled within 5-4 in the top of the sixth, but the Mounties got that run back with one of its own in the bottom half of the inning.

Maddy Prater was 3 for 4 with a triple for South Central, while Liz Music was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Hannah Ayers was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Also at the plate for South Central, Olivia Hudson singled with an RBI, Kailee Beaver singled and scored a run, and Kyrstin Hamons doubled and drove in two runs. Ellysia Driver had a double and Annie Cook had a single.

Prater allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks in six innings in the circle for the Trojans.

The two teams will rematch on Thursday in Greenwich.

Monroeville 11, New London 1

NEW LONDON — The Eagles remained unbeaten at 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the FC with Tuesday's five-inning win over the host Wildcats.

Abbi Poths and Callie Rosser led the Monroeville lineup in the win. Poths was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs, while Rosser was 4 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

Grace Tonelli also doubled twice with an RBI and scored three times for the Eagles, who also got a 3 for 3 performance and two RBIs from Sydney Meisler.

In the circle, Payton Scheid allowed an unearned run on two hits with nine strikeouts and no walks for the victory.

OLIVESBURG — The Lady Flyers scored an early run in the first inning, but were unable to keep up with the Cougars (9-2, 3-0) in Tuesday's FC road loss.

Presley Stang doubled and scored for St. Paul (2-9, 0-3), while Morgan Baxter had the other hit.

PLYMOUTH — The Big Red picked up their first FC win and improved to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the league with Tuesday's win over the visiting Roughriders.

CASTALIA — The Crimson Flashes had 10 hits, but only pushed one run across the plate in Tuesday's SBC Bay Division loss to the Polar Bears.

Olivia Whetstone was 3 for 3 with a double in the defeat, while Kalli Sowers was 2 for 3 with the lone RBI that scored Cassidy Hamons, who singled. Macey Robinson also added two hits for the Flashes (5-8, 1-2).

In the circle, Kaylee Davis took the loss. She allowed six runs (four earned) on 11 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
