Society of American Military Engineers Chesapeake Post awards STEM scholarships to Harford County students

Jul. 7—The Chesapeake Post of the Society of American Military Engineers has awarded 11 academic scholarships and one engineering camp stipend to students from Harford and Cecil counties.

The association provides these scholarships to promote the engineering, scientist and architect career fields. Awardees are given the opportunity to network with Chesapeake Post STEM professionals in pursuit of internships, additional scholarships, full-time employment, graduate school and other professional development opportunities.

Returning student awardees include: Annie Keele, a 2020 graduate of C. Milton Wright, currently attending Towson University; Peilin Chen, a 2021 graduate of the Aberdeen Science and Math Academy, currently at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Zachery Coogan, a 2019 graduate of the Aberdeen Science and Math Academy, currently at the University of Maryland; and Amy Pham, a 2019 graduate of the Aberdeen Science and Math Academy, attending the California Institute of Technology.

The new scholarship awardees include: Alexis Lee Bultman, North Harford High School, who will attend the University of Maryland Baltimore County; Connor Pavlitsa, C. Milton Wright High School; Allison Rogers, Elkton High School, headed to Virginia Tech; Joyce Davis, Harford Community College, going to UMBC; Kristin Martin, HCC, going to Virginia Tech; and Nate Caughron, Aberdeen High School.

In partnership with the Chesapeake Post, the family of Timothy Jacob "Jake" Kluchinsky III, member of Edgewood High School Class of 2011, selected Sebastian Andujar-Aquino as the first recipient of the Jake Kluchinsky scholarship. The scholarship assists Edgewood High School graduates who will be pursuing an associate's degree in engineering technology at Harford Community College. Kluchinsky was a student participant of the society and studied engineering technology at HCC prior to his death in July 2019, according to a legacy.com obituary.

The Society of American Military Engineers is a nonprofit professional engineering association that actively promotes the advancement of both individual technical knowledge and the collective engineering capabilities of governments, the uniformed services and private industry.

Their goal is to unite public and private sector entities and individuals in these fields so that they can prepare for and overcome natural and man-made disasters, acts of terrorism and improve security at home and abroad.

The Chesapeake Post does this by hosting monthly luncheon meetings and other professional/social activities attended by members of local government, military, private industry, students and other interested parties.
