Snow starts to melt in Berks County, but get ready for more winter weather

Feb. 25—The sunshine and milder conditions are dispensing with the snowpack in Berks County, but the forecast includes a brief shot of wintry weather.

A burst of snow and sleet is forecast to occur between 1 and 4 a.m. Saturday while most people are sleeping, then with a changeover to rain near daybreak that would wash away any accumulation.

AccuWeather is forecasting little to no accumulation of sleet and snow for Berks while the National Weather Service estimates up to an inch.

Beyond that, there are other rainy episodes in the forecast with most of the daytime temperatures in the 40s.

February had been running much colder than normal, but the warming trend toward the end should pull the average temperature back to near normal.

The long-range AccuWeather forecast shows days with snow and rain in March but with little to no accumulation.

Officially in Berks, 42.4 inches of snow has been recorded this season, with 27.7 of that in February. The February total is sixth-highest on record, just 0.30 inch out of fifth place.

The Berks precipitation database starts with 1869, the earliest year for which complete records are available to start an unbroken chain to the present.
