SkyCam falls to field, causing brief stoppage in Saints-Vikings game
With just over four minutes left in the first half of Sunday’s New Orleans Saints-Minnesota Vikings wild-card playoff game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, the game had to be paused for an unexpected reason.
It wasn’t a power outage, a lá Super Bowl XLVII in the same building, but it was equipment related.
The SkyCam, the relatively small but expensive cable-suspended camera that hangs over the middle of the field to provide a bird’s eye view of games, fell to the field.
It happened just after a successful second-and-8 conversion by the Vikings put them in a first-and-goal situation at the New Orleans 3, with the camera landing on the 20-yard line.
It delayed the game for only a few minutes and no one was injured, but it did seem to affect the Vikings’ rhythm, as they weren’t able to score a touchdown and settled for a chip-shot field goal from Dan Bailey.
