Sizzling start continues for Logansport girls golf team

Aug. 11—It's been quite a start to the season for the Logansport girls golf team.

The Berries opened their season last week with a win at the 11-team Harrison Invitational at Coyote Crossing. They closed out opening week with a win at the 14-team Twin Lakes Invitational at Tippecanoe Country Club.

They opened the dual meet season with a 181-218 win over Wabash Monday at Dykeman Park Golf Course. They then defeated Lewis Cass 175-246 Wednesday at Dykeman.

The Berries are a senior-led team with four seniors and a sophomore in their varsity lineup.

Myleigh Moon led the Berries with a 3-over 39 Wednesday. Reiss Weaver had a 43, Sophia Kay had a 46 and Kendra Sutton and Chloe Crook each added a 47.

Moon said her round could have been better as she was 1-over after eight holes.

"I ended on No. 1 and I counted my score before I started on that hole and that's never a good thing," she said. "So I knew what I needed to get, then I bladed my chip, but it's OK. I ended up with a 6 on that one.

"You can always knock off a few extra strokes. I didn't end the best but you really can't be too mad about a 39."

Weaver had a nice round as well at 7-over.

"It was a little rocky at first but then it got better. I had a few pars and a birdie, it was all right," she said.

The Berries knew they had a good team with all five starters back from last year's team that won their first sectional title in girls golf since 1992. But they've taken their game to a new level to start this season with wins at the big invitationals.

"We knew we might win but we weren't really sure so it was kind of a good surprise," Weaver said.

"That was very exciting for us, especially to win at Tippecanoe Country Club, our sectional course," Moon added. "That's a very good thing for us. It gives us a lot of hope for whenever sectionals come around."

The Berries are getting close to being ranked in the top 20. They're an honorable mention team now. Coach Abby Lundy said the state coaches use a scoring formula to determine the top 20.

The Berries shot a 175 on their home course Wednesday and need to post similar scores on away courses to crack the top 20.

"I would say a consistent 350, 340 or less on 18-hole tournaments," Lundy said. "We're really on pace for it."

"We could probably get to top 20," Weaver said. "I hope we will, we have a chance to because we're as good as these teams."

Lundy said she has a group of golfers that put in the time.

"I think they all have a possibility to play college golf if they want to," she said. "They've put in the time, the work, the effort. They know what it takes to go low. To be able to win your first invitational of the season and end the week with an invitational win ... now we go to Sandy Pines for regionals so that'll be a little different for us. We'll play the better teams in the northern part of the state at regionals. That'll be a little different for us but they all put the time and effort into it."

"We would all just love to win sectionals again senior season," Moon said. "State would be great."

Kate Barber shot a 44 to lead the Berry JV and Izabella Corcoran added a 63.

Kendall Hlebasko led Cass with a 54. She was followed by Savy Bowser (55), Maggie Taylor (68) and Zabrina Cunningham (69).

Cass coach Charlie Jones said he still doesn't have his full team due to the State Fair. He added the Kings are mostly young and inexperienced this year.

"We have one more who's probably going to be 2 or 3 and she'll help us a bunch," he said. "We've got a couple I didn't bring who are beginners and we have a couple here who haven't played a whole lot of golf. The main thing for today for us was to focus on relaxing and having a fun time out here with them. We're trying to create that environment. We started out pretty good but it seems like we got a little nervous and let the nerves get to us. We'll get better."

The Kings have their home opener against North Miami Monday at Logansport Golf Club. The Berries compete at the Western Invitational on Saturday.

"This weekend we play at Chippendale which is the old sectional course," Lundy said. "There's a bunch of good teams coming up. That'll give us a little bit of insight for those southern teams that are in the top 20."
