Sixers want Tyrese Maxey to look for his offense more, not to hesitate

CAMDEN, N.J.–Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is a rising star in the NBA. The now third-year guard out of Kentucky has continued to make strides forward and he has done an excellent job of being able to be efficient on the offensive end of the floor.
He has been terrific to begin the preseason scoring 20 points on 6-for-8 shooting in the opener with the Brooklyn Nets and then scoring 21 on 9-for-11 shooting against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday. There is a lot to like about his game, but the Sixers want to see more.
There is an emphasis for the Sixers right now to get the ball pushed up the floor and let Maxey catch it in stride to take to the basket aggressively and use his speed as an advantage.
“Yeah, you can get really anyone, but if you have your choice, I think that would be a very wise choice,” coach Doc Rivers said of pushing the ball up the floor to Maxey. “Especially, in the open floor.”
In terms of hesitating and sometimes looking to pass, Rivers sees improvement in that area, but he wants the 21-year-old to just go and look for his offense more often.
“There’s times where he gets lost,” Rivers explained. “He didn’t touch the ball for a while and then when he does touch it, he becomes a facilitator, but overall now I don’t think you need to turn him on at all.”
The good thing for the Sixers now is that Maxey is going to continue to develop and be a big factor in whatever Philadelphia does in the 2022-23 season. One can safely assume that the young man will continue to grow and be a part of that Big 3 moving forward with this team.
