Six Berks wrestlers win individual championships at season-opening tournaments

Dec. 4—Six Berks wrestlers won individual titles at season-opening tournaments that ended Saturday: Daniel Boone's Tucker Hogan, Schuylkill Valley's Ian Vitalo, Wilson's Ryan McMillan, Tulpehocken's Abramm Schaffer and Jack Heckman, and Wyomissing's Andrew Bresnahan.

Hogan, a junior, won the 189-pound title at the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament at Williamsport. He defeated Saucon Valley's Jacob Jones 3-0 in the final after winning by fall, technical fall and major decision in his first three matches.

Vitalo, a sophomore, won the 139-pound title at the Rough Rider Tournament at Catasauqua with a 3-1 decision over Lackawanna Trail's Ethan Lee. He had pins in his first two matches.

McMillan, a junior, won the 215-pound title at the Cumberland Valley Kickoff Classic in Mechanicsburg by pinning Downingtown West's Mason Hale in 1:53 in the final. He won his first two matches by fall and won by decision in the semifinals.

Abramm Schaffer won the 107-pound title, Heckman the 215-pound championship and Bresnahan the 189-pound title at the Big Cat Crawl at East Pennsboro.

Schaffer, a freshman, beat York Suburban's Justin Adams 8-4 in the final after winning his first two matches by fall. Heckman, a freshman, won all three of his matches by fall. He pinned Hanover's Evan Fiorelli in 3:53 in the final.

Bresnahan, a freshman, beat East Pennsboro's Kingston Moss 9-4 in the final. He won by decision in the semis.

At Williamsport, other place winners for Boone were Brett Marchiano, fifth at 152; Nolan Stephen Brown, fifth at 139; Dean Houser, sixth at 127; and Jared Hewitt, seventh at 160. The Blazers finished 11th out of 24 teams.

At Cumberland Valley, other place winners for Wilson were McKaden Speece, second at 114; Jimmy Garcia, third at 127; Logan Kurzweg, third at 285; and Blaise Eidle, fifth at 172. The Bulldogs finished fourth out of 24 teams.

Exeter and Oley Valley also competed at Cumberland Valley. The Eagles, who finished 16th, had two sixth-place finishers in Michael Borja at 133 and Ashton Warchol at 145.

The Lynx finished 23rd.

At East Pennsboro, other place winners for Tulpehocken were Landon Youse, second at 127; Seth Karpulk, second at 139; Jonathan McQuillen, third at 145; Gionni Messersmith, third at 172; and Xzavier Dietrich, fourth at 133. The Trojans finished second out of eight teams.

Other place winners for Wyomissing were Adrian Sanchez, second at 285; Jayden Breitenstein, third at 133; Rennie Harris, fourth at 107; Tyler Niedrowski, fourth at 172; Bryce Butler, fourth at 189; Kenneth Minton, fifth at 145; and Adam Baker, sixth at 107. The Spartans finished sixth.

At Catasauqua, Schuylkill Valley finished 13th and Kutztown 15th out of 16 teams.

Gov. Mifflin competed at the Solanco Mule Classic and finished 13th out of 25 teams.

Place winners for the Mustangs were Samuel Moyer, third at 160; Andrew Huesgen, fifth at 145; Hunter Unger, fifth at 285; and Jayleah Pletz, eighth at 107.
