Singles Day is a big shopping event.

While Black Friday is the most-anticipated day for deals and discounts in the UK and US, in other parts of the world, namely China, November 11 is the day to add items to your basket.

The annual holiday, which is champions the single life, started in 1993, when it was created by a group of students at Nanjing University.

The holiday encouraged people to buy gifts for themselves and has since become a shopping phenomenon - catching on worldwide.

This year Chinease retailer Alibaba made $13 billion in the first hour of Singles Day. Meanwhile, a report from Voucher Codes predicts that UK sales are expected to reach almost £1.3 billion today.
