Siena women's basketball cancels Niagara series after positive COVID-19 test result among team's Tier 1 personnel

Mar. 3—The Siena women's basketball team's series vs. Niagara, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, has been canceled following a positive COVID-19 test result stemming from a member of Siena's Tier 1 personnel group, the school announced Wednesday.

In a press release announcing the move, the Siena athletic department stated that, "contact tracing was conducted and, while it was determined there was no close contact between the individual who tested positive and the rest of the team's Tier 1 personnel, it was decided not to proceed with this weekend's series out of extra precaution."

Siena will move its attention to the MAAC tournament, which begins Monday in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Siena has only played 11 games to date, below the 13-game threshold set by the NCAA to qualify for the postseason, but the school has applied to the NCAA, in conjunction with the MAAC, for a postseason waiver to maintain eligibility for the NCAA Tournament.

Attempts to contact Siena athletic director John D'Argenio, Siena women's basketball head coach Ali Jaques and MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor were not immediately successful.
