Sidney Crosby out minimum of six weeks after sports hernia surgery

Sidney Crosby successfully underwent core muscle repair surgery that will sideline him for a minimum of six weeks, the Penguins announced Thursday.

It was reported earlier this week that Crosby was considering surgery after aggravating his injury in last Saturday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks, and was ruled out from Tuesday night’s matchup with the New York Rangers.

The Penguins have faced copious injury issues already this season, and Crosby will join injured teammates Patric Hörnqvist and Kris Letang on the shelf.

The captain leads the Penguins with 12 assists and 17 points through 17 games this season despite a nagging sports hernia injury sustained in training camp.
