SHS tennis finishes fifth at regional round

The Sturgis tennis team completed its season at regionals in Mattawan on Thursday.

The Lady Trojans finished fifth at the tournament. Taking first place was Portage Central and Mattawan was second. Byron Center finished third, St. Joseph was fourth.

Hayley Miller made it all the way to the finals in fourth singles action. There, she fell 6-2, 6-3 to Lilly Shasky of St. Joseph. To reach the finals, Miller won her opening match over Holly Carpenter of Middleville Thornapple Kellogg with scores of 6-0 and 6-1. Miller then upset second-seeded Sydney Boucher of Byron Center with scores of 6-1, 6-2. In the semifinals, Miller then upset third-seeded Emma Coleman of Mattawan with scores of 6-2 and 6-4.

The second doubles team made it to the semifinals. Tina Tran and Tess Scheske came into the regional round as the fourth seed, which gave them a bye in the opening round. Following that, the duo won over Cailin Wodrich and Tyne Bufka of Middleville Thornapple Kellogg with scores of 6-0 and 6-4. In the semifinals, top-seeded and regional champions Katie Richards and Addison Devos of Byron Center won with scores of 6-1 and 6-0.

At second singles, Katie Strawser picked up a victory in her first match. She beat Lily Sanchez of Zeeland East with a score of 6-3, 6-4. Strawser then fell to top-seeded and eventual regional champion Romika Shokohi of Mattawan with score of 6-0, 6-0.

In third singles, Mackenzie McMillin won her first match. That came over Emma Boucher of Byron Center with a score of 7-5 and 6-1. In the second match, McMillin was upended by second-seeded Grace Yuan of St. Joseph.

The third doubles team picked up a win as well. Ava Stewart and Madison Golden won in three sets over Carly Lukins and Grace Norman of Zeeland East. They dropped the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5), but came back to win the second set 7-5 and the third 6-4.

In first singles action, Rylee Carver dropped her first match. It came with a pair of close scores that ended in tiebreakers as well. Liz Vincent of Byron Center won the match at 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (5).

The first doubles team of Emily Schuller and Vivienne Merchant were knocked out in the first round. The duo dropped a three-set match to Adelaide Douglass and Madison Engel of Mattawan. Sturgis’ team dropped the first set 6-0 but battled back to win the second 6-1 before Mattawan won the third and final set 6-2.

The third doubles team also lost their first match. Jessica Eash and Allison Hearld fell to Sloane Lohroff and Nadia Baird of Mattawan with scores of 6-4 and 7-5.
