GROUP 5

Southern 61, Passaic Tech 16: The Rams (18-1) recorded nine pins and won 11 of the 14 bouts to defeat Bulldogs (17-7) and advance to the Group 5 championship match.

Southern will meet defending Group 5 champion Phillipsburg (15-2) Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Rutgers University's Jersey Mike's Arena in the Group 5 final. The Rams defeated Phillipsburg 42-12 on Jan. 19.

The Rams will be trying to win their fifth group championship and third in the last four state tournaments. It is their 13th appearance in a state final.

1. Raritan 37, 2. Point Pleasant Boro 27: The defending Group 2 champion Rockets (22-5) won the first three bouts to jump out to a 12-0 lead and went on to defeat the Panthers (15-2) for their fifth sectional championship.

Raritan will host Governor Livingston (16-3), the North 2 Group 2 champion Friday night in a Group 2 semifinal.

The winner of that match will meet the winner of the High Point at Haddonfield semifinal Sunday at Rutgers University's Jersey Mike's Arena in the Group 2 championship match.

Kieran Falzon (190) began the match with a win by technical fall. Riyan Bhutto followed with a 3-2 win over Declan Pratt and heavyweight Tom Jeleniewski, who returned to the lineup Monday night after missing several matches with an injury won by major decision.

Point Boro then closed to 12-6 before Matt Erven (120) and returning state qualifiers Ryan Mansueto (126) and Zach Reilley (138) all pinned sandwiched around major decision by sophomore Alexander Delaurier (132) as Raritan built a 34-6 lead after nine bouts.

The Rockets led 37-9 before they forfeited the last three bouts.

SOUTH GROUP 5

1. Southern 48, 3. Kingsway 14: The Rams (17-1) won the first three bouts to build a 14-0 lead and went on to defeat the Dragons for their fifth consecutive sectional championship and 16th in program history.

Southern will host North 1 Group 5 champion Passaic Tech (17-6) Friday night in a Group 5 semifinal.

The winner of that match will meet the winner of the Howell at Phillipsburg semifinal Sunday at Rutgers University's Jersey Mike's Arena in the Group 5 championship match.

Freshman Anthony Mason (106) began the match with a pin. Attila Vigilante (113) followed with a technical fall and Scottie Sari (120) a decision.

Southern won seven straight bouts from 144-215 to make it 48-8. The Rams won 11 of the 14 bouts.

Two-time state top three finisher Conor Collins (132), returning state fifth-place finisher Cole Velardi (165) and returning state qualifier Riley O'Boyle (215) also pinned for Southern.

3. Bergen Catholic 37, 6. Christian Brothers Academy 19: The Crusaders won five straight bouts from 150-190 to erase a 9-3 deficit and defeat the Colts (9-9) for the second time this season.

Christopher Bacchioni (150), the NJSIAA fifth-place finisher at 138 in 2021, began the winning run with a 3-1 over returning state 150-pound third-place finisher Tyler Barrett. It was Bacchioni's second win of the season over Barrett.

Aidan Wallace (157), the state seventh-place finisher at 126 last year, followed with 2-0 win in sudden victory over last year's NJSIAA 157-pound third-place finisher Zander Silva on a takedown in the final second of the sudden victory period. It was Wallace's second win of the season over Silva.

Two-time state qualifier Eric Broadie (165) then defeated returning state qualifier Anthony Lawrence 3-1 on a takedown eight seconds into the sudden victory period. It was Broadie's second win in sudden victory over Lawrence this season.

Two-time state medalist Justin O'Nello (175) defeated returning state qualifier Nick Stump 6-2 for his second win of the season over Stump.

Pantaleo Varga (190) concluded the run and made it 21-9 Bergen Catholic with a pin.

A.J. Falcone (126), Brendan Boyer (138), returning state runner-up Julian George (144) won by decision, returning region champion Robert Canterino (215) pinned and Shore Conference Tournament 113-pound champion Robert Duffy won by major decision for CBA.

1. St. John Vianney 52, 9. Donovan Catholic 22: Returning state champion Anthony Knox (120) won by major decision over returning state qualifier Dezmond Lenaghan and Jake Zaltsman (126) won by technical fall over Sawyer Ostroff in a matchup of returning state qualifiers as the Lancers (11-2) defeated the Griffins (7-15).

Michael Foley (215), Anthony Paulino (132), Kevin McBride (157), returning state fifth-place finisher Jasiah Queen (165) and Thomas Cleary (175) all pinned for St. John Vianney.

St. John Vianney will host No. 4 seed Red Bank Catholic Thursday night in group semifinal.

4. Red Bank Catholic 60, 5. Holy Cross 18: Freshman Hayden Wooley (175), in his first varsity bout, began the match with a pin in 36 seconds and the Caseys went on to defeat the Lancers.

Michael Palmieri (190) and returning state heavyweight seventh-place finisher Lorenzo Portella (heavyweight) both pinned in 16 seconds. Noah Michaels (120) and Michael Milke (132) also pinned for Red Bank Catholic).

Returning state qualifier Giovanni Scafidi (132) and Aidan Grant (144) pinned and two-time state qualifier and 2021 NJSIAA 113-pound fifth-place finisher Sebastian Ortega (126) recorded a major decision during the decisive run.

Jackson Memorial will be trying to win its 11th sectional title and first since 2019.

Brick Memorial defeated Jackson Memorial 38-32 on Jan. 14, but both teams have different lineups now than they did then.

Matt Erven (120) and returning state qualifiers Ryan Mansueto (126) and Braden Kmak (144) and sophomore Alex Delaurier (132) all pinned during the decisive run.

Raritan will try for its fifth sectional championship Wednesday night when it hosts Point Pleasant Boro.

Point Boro will trying to win its first sectional title since 2018 and third overall Wednesday night at Raritan.

Shore 33: An 11-5 win by Luke DeBenedett at 126 pounds started a four-bout, 19-point run that gave the Garnet Gulls (14-9) an insurmountable 34-21 lead with two bouts left as they avenged a regular season defeat to the Blue Devils (12-9) and advanced to a sectional final matchup Wednesday night at defending Group 1 state champion Delaware Valley.

P.J. Niethe (132), Jude Bowers (138) and Joe Beley (144) followed DeBenedett's win with a pin, major decision and pin respectively.

Shore then pinned and won by forfeit in the final two bouts.

SOUTH GROUP 5

AT SOUTHERN

1.  Southern 63, 8. Egg Harbor Township 11

1. Southern 61, 4. Highland 6: The defending sectional champion Rams (16-1) won 12 of the 14 bouts as they rolled to the win over the Tartans and advanced to a sectional championship matchup with Kingsway.

Southern will host the sectional final Wednesday night. Southern defeated Kingsway in last year's sectional final. The Rams will be trying for their 16th sectional title.

Anthony Mason (106), Attila Vigilante (113), returning state seventh-place finisher Matt Henrich (150), Nick Bennet (157), returning state fifth-place finisher Cole Velardi (165), Mitch Bivona (175) and Colin French (190) all pinned.

Velardi picked up career win No. 100.
