Shooting in Vernon prompts police investigation

May 11—VERNON — Police are on the scene of a shooting in the area of 182 Terrace Drive, during which a male victim was shot in the torso, Police Chief James Kenny said today.

The man, who was not identified, was brought to Rockville General Hospital and then flown via Life Star to Hartford Hospital for treatment of his injuries, Kenny said. The chief didn't know the man's condition, but did say there was considerable bleeding.

Kenny said several people are in custody but it's still to be determined whether one of them is the shooter. No gun had been recovered as of this evening, and state police and responders from Manchester, South Windsor, and Glastonbury were assisting Vernon police.

Curious neighbors looked on this evening as police worked, and a TV blared from a resident's apartment news of the shooting just feet away. An hour after the incident, police were seen going door to door in the area seeking witnesses and a woman was overheard telling a detective she heard the gunshot but saw no one running.

A large area next to Route 182 was cordoned off with yellow crime tape and a bundle of clothing laid where the victim was worked on by emergency personnel.

The apartment complex is a lower income area in the Rockville section of town.
