Detainee killed in Border Patrol shooting at Ysleta station in far East El Paso

A detainee was fatally shot by the U.S. Border Patrol on Tuesday afternoon after a possible confrontation at the Ysleta Border Patrol Station in far East El Paso, officials said.

The shooting occurred about 12:45 p.m. at the Ysleta Border Patrol Station at 12245 Pine Springs Drive near Loop 375 and Rojas Drive.

The Mexican Consulate in El Paso said in a statement that the man who died was a Mexican citizen who was being processed on criminal charges. The consulate added it is in communication with U.S. authorities as the investigation continues.

A statement by the Border Patrol said that agents at the station were "involved in a shooting incident" and "one person in custody was shot and transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment."

The man wounded in the shooting later died at an El Paso hospital, FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey R. Downey said in a statement.

Because of the ongoing investigation, Border Patrol spokesman Agent Carlos Rivera said he could not confirm information posted on social media claiming that the detainee was shot after allegedly reaching for an agent's gun.

Details on the incident, information on the person killed and how many Border Patrol agents were involved has not been disclosed.

The shooting is under investigation by the FBI with assistance from the El Paso Police Department, as well as U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

An FBI spokeswoman said that the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and Evidence Response Team were investigating and processing the scene.
