Sheffield's restaurant has closed at Rose Hill in Aiken
Aug. 15—Sheffield's is no longer open for business in Aiken.
The restaurant stopped serving customers earlier this month.
Sheffield's was located in the main house on the Winter Colony estate in Aiken known as Rose Hill.
Rose Hill is continuing to operate as an event venue, and overnight accommodations also are still available.
The following message was posted Aug. 11 on the Rose Hill in Aiken page on Facebook:
"Thank you to all Sheffield's patrons. We have made a business decision to close the restaurant and will continue to offer events and overnight accommodations.
"If you have questions, need further details or would like to book an event or enjoy staying at Rose Hill, please contact us directly (at 803-648-1181)."
Last November, in his Taste of the Town column in the Aiken Standard, Michael Stern described Sheffield's filet mignon as "a velvety cut of red meat" and "profoundly succulent."
He also praised the restaurant's créme brûlée for its "extraordinary flavor."
Rose Hill is being offered for sale for an asking price of $2.925 million.
Jane Page Thompson, a Realtor with Carolina Real Estate Company, is the listing agent.
Rose Hill is at 221 Greenville St. N.W. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built around 1898, the estate used to be the winter home of Col. Sheffield Phelps, and his wife, Claudia Wright Phelps.
The main house is a two-story, shingle-style Dutch Colonial structure.
Andrew and Elizabeth Hobbs currently own Rose Hill.
They purchased the estate for $1.375 million in August 2020 from Niki Inc.
Kenan Patel, in the name of Niki Inc., bought Rose Hill while it was in foreclosure for $700,000 at an Aiken County Master-in-Equity deficiency sale in June 2018 at the Aiken County Judicial Center.
Elizabeth Hobbs told the Aiken Standard in late June that another restaurant at the estate, The Stables, was closed for the summer "to allow for maintenance and (other) work."
