Sewickley Council awards paving contract to Plum company

Apr. 15—Sewickley officials have awarded this year's paving contract to Plum-based A. Liberoni Inc.

The near $597,000 contract was awarded via 6-2 vote Tuesday night despite the concerns of council President Jeff Neff.

"I'm surprised they put a bid in after they said they would never work for us again," Neff said.

Vice president Todd Renner also dissented. Christine Allen was absent.

Neff said there was a dispute with the company about the quality of work a few years ago, in particular the intersection of Grant and Thorn streets.

Councilman Larry Rice said the borough withheld money for lack of performance, and a settlement was later negotiated.

Borough officials did not say how much money was withheld or was in the settlement.

A. Liberoni officials did not return a call seeking comment.

Neff said after the meeting that he is glad the borough is moving forward with the paving plan.

"I'm sure they'll do a fine job," Neff said. "We pay our engineers to monitor the road paving company. We need to make it clear to them they have to be on their game."

The contact is subject to review of the borough budget. It includes two alternate roads.

Borough Manager Marla Marcinko said council budgeted $600,000 for paving this year.
