Severe weather expected

Jefferson County EMA Director Jim Anderson warns area residents to stay home from 7 p.m. Friday night through Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

"If you don't have to drive tonight and in the morning, please don't," he said.

The county may see mixed precipitation, predominantly snow in the north end of the county and predominantly freezing rain in the southern end. Snow accumulations of up to one-half inch and ice accumulations from a glaze to several hundredths of an inch are forecast. Localized snow accumulations of up to an inch are possible.

Information from Glascock County's EMA Director Mike Lyons said NOAA had issued a special weather statement through 3 p.m. The county's residents can expect an increased chance for light snow and ice accumulation tonight through tomorrow morning. Up to a half inch of snow and sleet predominantly in the northern area of the county. NOAA issued a Winter Weather Advisory.

The time frame for the weather is from 7 p.m. tonight to 11 a.m. tomorrow. A glaze to several hundredths of an inch of ice from freezing rain predominantly in the southern area. Residents are advised of a chance of slick spots from ice or snow on the ground tomorrow may linger into midmorning as the surface temperatures could be below freezing until then.

"Stay off the roads unless it's an emergency. After 11 o'clock tomorrow morning, it should be OK to go outside. Drivers should be careful traveling on bridges and overpasses, which freeze before roads do. Untreated bridges and overpasses could still be frozen tomorrow," Lyons said.

"By lunchtime Saturday the temperature should be above 32 degrees," Anderson said. "Be sure to charge phones as ice can bring down power lines. Watch for black ice on roadways."
