Two Southbound lanes of I-77 reopened in SC after crash involving tanker truck, deputies say

An overnight crash involving multiple cars and a tanker truck closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 77 in York County on Friday morning, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Two lanes were opened around 11:40 a.m., according to police. The lanes will be slow moving.

Deputies said they were responding to a crash involving several cars on I-77 near the Cherry Road exit around 1:45 a.m.

Several people were hurt, but no one was killed, according to an update from the sheriff’s office at 2:30 a.m.

Photos shared by the sheriff’s office showed an overturned tanker truck and several cars with extensive danger.

Fuel from the tanker truck spilled onto the road and deputies said crews were on the way to begin clean up. They warned the interstate will be closed for several hours.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said the fuel from the tanker truck would need to be pumped into another tanker before the truck could be moved.

Chuck Haynes, director of York County Emergency Management, said there does not appear to be any environmental impacts from the fuel spill.
