Service for Lanphier High student killed outside school is Tuesday

A 15-year-old suspect remains in the Sangamon County Juvenile Detention Center on three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing of a Lanphier High School senior as county prosecutors work on moving the case to adult court.
A funeral for Pierre V. Scott Jr., 18, who was fatally stabbed outside of the high school on Nov. 17, will be held at Union Baptist Church in Springfield Tuesday morning.
Sangamon County State's Attorney Dan Wright still plans on filing a petition with the juvenile court to have the suspect's case moved.
The 15-year girl, whose name has not been released, was located and arrested on Nov. 19.
In addition to the murder charges, the juvenile faces three counts of aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. If convicted as an adult, she faces 22 to 65 years in prison.

Amarion Santiago, a senior at Lanphier, had been friends with Scott since sixth grade at Washington Middle School.
"Ever since I met Pierre, he was comedian," said Santiago, following a balloon release and memorial vigil for Scott at Lanphier on Nov. 19. "He was always the other class clown. It was always me and him as class clowns. Teachers hated us in classes together.
"It's going to be kind of different (without him). When I was in classes, he was the person I joked with and he was just a happy, nice person all around. Everybody liked him here."

Santiago helped plan the vigil for Scott and he also helped coordinate a peaceful walkout by Lanphier students earlier on Nov. 19. Students at Southeast and Springfield high schools also walked out of morning classes, demanding that School District 186 implement more security measures.
Sharis Anthony, standing next to Santiago, her son, said metal detectors and more security officers inside and outside of all the high schools, but specifically Lanphier, were needed.
The District 186 board of education held a special meeting on Nov. 22, though most of it was in executive session.
In the public comment section, Teresa Haley, president of the Springfield chapter and state conference of the NAACP, said that most students she heard from "don’t care about (the) inconvenience" of extra security measures.
Holding a sign that read "Forever 18," Lanphier sophomore Amiah Ewing admitted she was "feeling sad, but I'm just happy (Scott is) in a better place."
Scott had turned 18 just before the fatal stabbing.
Santiago admitted he was "hurting on the inside," but uplifted that about 400 students, parents, school officials and other community members came out for the vigil.
Santiago said he had one other thing to do for his late friend.
"I just hope I can keep my goofiness up," Santiago said, "because I know he would like it."
