The Queen's Gambit: Anya Taylor-Joy gives an update on season 2
Last year we all got completely, and understandably obsessed with The Queen's Gambit. After landing on Netflix in October 2020 it wasn't long before the drama found itself a huge fan base of, well, pretty much everyone, and we've all been wondering ever since, is there going to be a second series of The Queen's Gambit?
Well, not only have some of the cast said they'd be interested in returning for a second series of the show, but now Anya Taylor-Joy herself has spoken about what another instalment of The Queen's Gambit might actually look like, and it sounds great.
First, Taylor-Joy gave us the news we were all hoping for, clarifying that she hasn't ruled out returning to reprise her role as Beth Harmon.
"It would be silly of me to go, 'There's never going to be a second series', and then I’m 40, and [co-creator Scott Frank]’s like, 'Yo, how do you feel about this? You want to go back?'"
She then spoke about what she hopes would be next for Beth in the story, saying, "I hope she starts doing things for her own enjoyment," she told Elle. "I’d like Beth to pick up Benny and spend some time with him in Russia, just the two of them being snobby intellectuals together, and I hope she has a Bowie phase."
This isn't the first time Anya Taylor-Joy has spoken about the potential for a second season. Speaking at the 2021 Critics Choice Award after picking up the Best Actress Critics Choice award for her part as Beth Harmon in the hit series Taylor-Joy spoke about the possibility of a second series.
"It is obviously incredibly flattering that people want to spend more time with characters that we care so much about and that we poured so much love into," she told reporters after her win. "But we did intend it to be a limited series, so we were all quite surprised when people started asking for Season 2. That being said, never say never."
The hit drama follows the rise of chess champion Beth Harmon as she grapples with drug dependency and the inherent sexism in the industry. The series is based on the book of the same name by Walter Tevis, and the bad news is that because the series covered off all the plot from the novel, it initially seemed as though a second series wasn't hugely likely. Plus, the Netflix show was released as a limited series, so it's no surprise that Netflix hasn't confirmed a second instalment.
But! Before you panic! That doesn't mean we should give up hope. This isn't the first time Taylor-Joy has spoken about the possibility of second series of the show.
In February this year Taylor-Joy told Town & Country, "If I've learned anything from being in this industry, it's never say never. "I adore the character," she said of returning for a possible second series of the show. "And I would certainly come back if I was asked to, but I do think we leave Beth in a good place."
"I think the rest of her life will surely be an adventure as well," she continued. "But in the quest that she goes on in this to find some form of peace, just some form of being able to be happy with who she is. I think it ends in a nice place."
Meanwhile, Harry Melling who plays Harry Beltik (and who you might recognise from playing Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter franchise) has also spoken out in reserved favour of a second season.
"It’d be good, right, a Queen’s Gambit part two?" he said. "The place we end in the limited series is the place we end in the book. I don’t know if there can be another one, but stranger things have happened."
Fingers well and truly crossed.
