Serge Ibaka on scarf argument with OG Anunoby: 'I was angry'
What about scarves, though?
That was the sticking point between Toronto Raptors teammates Serge Ibaka and OG Anunoby, in a now-viral disagreement that took place when the young Anunoby played the guest on Ibaka’s fashion-forward digital series ‘Avec Classe’.
The 22-year-old Anunoby stayed stone-faced in his role as the agitator, staying steadfast in his assertion that not only did he set the tone for the team’s fashion direction but that he influenced Ibaka himself — a self-proclaimed artist when it comes to clothing — by putting him on to the power of a scarf as an accessory.
“You’d better stop, OG,” Ibaka repeated, getting visibly riled up, half-seriously threatening to halt filming and cancel the show.
While the difference of opinion and who-influenced-who arguments eventually subsided, Ibaka revealed in an interview that he was actually pretty upset with Anunoby’s assertion that his choices influenced the elder Ibaka in the slightest.
“Yes, I was angry,” Ibaka told Yang-Yi Goh of GQ. “When I started wearing scarves OG was still in high school watching me on TV.”
Ibaka certainly has plenty of tenure over OG in his claim. He has been in the league ten years compared to Anunoby’s three.
In the GQ piece, where the Congo native Ibaka reviews scarves and gives plenty of fashion advice, Serge gives his home country the credit for influencing his sartorial ‘art’.
“Where I come from, dressing is a culture,” Ibaka said. “When I go back home, I cannot dress bad. I cannot miss, or people will be like, ‘What’s going on with you, Serge? Did you lose your mind, or what?’ That’s the culture.”
Whatever the reason, and whatever the influence, Raptors fans are likely happy that Ibaka’s fashion choices have been restricted to just pre- and post-game looks now that he is healthy and back in the lineup. He returned to the lineup on Thursday after missing the previous three games with an injury.
