Senior QB Caden Moore's big night leads Cambridge to 28-0 rout over Indian Creek

WINTERSVILLE—While some teams are breaking in new quarterbacks this weekend, the Cambridge Bobcats enjoy the luxury of featuring a 3-year starter behind center in senior Caden Moore.

Moore showed the benefits of an experienced quarterback Friday night in Wintersville, as the veteran QB threw for 253 yards and four touchdowns as Cambridge rolled through Kettlewell Stadium and left on the strength of a 28-0 verdict against Indian Creek.

“It's tremendous having him back there,” said Cambridge head coach Ray Leek of Moore. “He can do a lot of things with his legs as well as his arm, and the more comfy he gets as we go along, he'll only get better.”

Moore did much well Friday night, finishing 18 of 21 while adding 40 yards on the ground.

He threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers and got eight different pass catchers involved in the offense before earning a well-deserved break late in the fourth.

While Moore did make a couple key intermediate-length throws, the Bobcats' offensive philosophy of seemingly using the short passing game in place of the run paid dividends.

It helps to feature playmakers with the ability to stretch the field and compile yards after the catch.

“We have some playmakers and once the ball is in their hands, they can make things happen. “Leak said. “That was the game plan coming in,” Leek said. “We have some guys who can put the ball in the end zone.”

That first end zone trip didn't take long, coming on CHS' second drive of the game.

Facing a 2nd-and-3 from the Creek 36. The 'Cats loaded up the wide side of the field, forcing single coverage on the far side. Moore rolled briefly to his left before finding Davion Bahr on a receiver screen that bar took 36 yards to the house.

The next drive Moore hooked up with Beau Stottsberry from 4-yards out for a 14-0 advantage. That play came two plays after a key 15-yard connection between the two on third down.

CHS took a 14-0 lead into the break and wasted little time adding to it post-halftime. After shutting down a Creek drive, the visitors needed all of one play as Xavier Caldwell stretched a short pass into a 49-yard scoring scamper down the visitor's sideline.

Later Moore found Devin Ogle on a 9-yard scoring connection to cap the night's offensive efforts.

As impressive as Moore and the offense were, the Bobcats' defense was equally as dominant.

Creek tried to use the rushing combo of promising sophomore Zion McGee and Cameron McAfee. McGee did the yeoman's work, logging 120 yards on 22 carries. Both backs ran hard and used their speed to hit and get through the second level a couple times.

But for the mos part, Cambridge held its ground. The defensive line managed to hold contain on short sweeps and misdirection plays, keeping the hosts off the scoreboard. As the game progressed, it became apparent Creek's passing game was still in the developing stage, allowing the visitors to load up further to stop the run.

“Our guys flew around to the ball and played with effort and energy all night,” Leek said. “There are thigns we need to clean up, but we're 1-0 after beating a good team and it's pretty exciting to get the win. We'll clean a few things up, but you can't question the heart tonight.”
