A federal jury in Florida ruled Friday that 3M Co. has to pay $77.5 million to army veteran whose lawsuit alleged the company’s faulty earplugs caused hearing loss and ringing in his ears. The award was the largest in a series of cases that claim a version of 3M’s earplugs sold to the military, called CAEv2, were defective and didn’t protect the ears from harmful noise. More than 290,000 service members, veterans and others have filed claims blaming 3M earplugs for causing hearing loss.

Mexican authorities confirmed on Friday the first death of a child from a severe form of hepatitis with unknown origin in the country, marking the first death in Latin America as cases spread worldwide. The three-year-old child, originally from the central state of Hidalgo, was transferred to a hospital in Mexico City, but died this week, the Hidalgo Health Secretariat said. Acute hepatitis is not usually seen in children, but in recent weeks doctors have observed an uptick in cases involving liver inflammation among otherwise healthy children under five years of age.
