Archaeologists believe recent erosion exposed the anchor this week.

The anchor was found just north of the pier. The plan is to leave it there because archeologists said keeping it there will help preserve it.

Archeologists at the Saint Augustine Lighthouse Museum are now studying the anchor. The team has been out twice this week to examine it.

“We certainly consider this historically significant,” archeologist Chuck Meide said. “This is a lost bit of technology that is directly related to our history.”

Officials said the anchor is most likely from the 1800s because there were more ships, and shipwrecks, off the coast then, increasing the probability it is from that period.
