Second suspect arrested in Joppatowne fatal shooting

May 21—Mahealani Linne Donawa, 22, of Edgewood was arrested Thursday in connection with a December 2021 shooting that left a Joppatowne man dead. Donawa is the girlfriend of Alton William Cumbo Jr. of Edgewood, who was arrested and charged with the death of William James Doran on Dec. 10, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Around 6:45 p.m. Dec. 10, deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision in the 500 block of Dembytown Road in Joppatowne. Medics who were called to the scene began performing CPR on Doran, who was found in the car, and discovered he was shot in the upper body. Medics transported Doran to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he died.

Detectives with the Harford County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division identified Cumbo as a suspect, and took him into custody on Dec. 15. He was charged with first- and second-degree murder, and first- and second-degree assault.

Detectives also found information indicating Donawa was the driver of the vehicle used by Cumbo during the homicide. On Wednesday, an arrest warrant was obtained for Donawa. She was taken into custody and transported to the Harford County Detention Center on Thursday, where she is being held without bail. Donawa faces charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit second-degree murder.

Cumbo remains in custody. His next hearing is June 24, with a pretrial scheduled for July 27.
