Second-ranked Washington topples Burlington in boys basketball showdown

Second-ranked (Class 3A) Washington High School toppled Burlington, 59-49, in a Southeast Conference game at Washington Friday night.

The Demons improved to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference. It was their eighth straight victory. Burlington is now 10-7 (5-2).

Burlington had three players in double figures. Merquiche Lewis Jr. finished with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Amarion Davis had 10 points, four rebounds and five steals and Nate Spear added 10 points, two assists and two steals.

Burlington's schedule isn't getting easier. Monday, the Grayhounds host top-ranked (Class 3A) Fort Madison (14-0, 7-0) at Carl Johannsen Gym.

WACO 71, WEST BURLINGTON 33: Three Warriors reached double figures and WACO sprinted to a SEI Superconference South Division win at Wayland.

WACO's Hunter Hughes led all shooters with 18 points. Reece Oswald scored 16 and Simeon Reichenbach had 10 points. Eleven Warriors scored. WACO led 44-14 at halftime.

Freshman Mason Watkins led West Burlington with seven points. Kaleb Allen scored six and Brady Martin and Arya Nowroozi each had five points.

WACO is now 14-3 (10-3 South). West Burlington (8-8, 8-6) hosts Cardinal Tuesday.

HOLY TRINITY 54, CENTRAL LEE 38: Conner Gehring's 18 points sparked the Crusaders to a South Division win at Fort Madison.

Tyler Snaadt scored 10 points for Holy Trinity. Mikey DiPrima had nine and Nick Fullenkamp added eight points. Alex Sandoval led Central Lee with 13 points. Brayden Wyrich had 11 and Corbin Pohren scored six.

Holy Trinity is 4-14 (4-10); Central Lee fell to 0-16 (0-13).

MOUNT PLEASANT 43, KEOKUK 27: A 14-2 run in the second quarter gave the Panthers some space and they picked up the Southeast Conference win in a game that had no double figures scorers at Keokuk.

Owen Vansickel led Mount Pleasant with nine points. Dewon Trent scored seven and Reese Kempker and Carter Amos each scored five. M.J. Davis paced Keokuk with eight points. Diego Garcia, Zach Meyers and Lucas Swainey each had four points.

Mount Pleasant is 6-9 (3-5); Keokuk slipped to 3-11 (0-8).

W-MU 53, WAPELLO 47: Cam Buffington's 18 points sparked Winfield-Mount Union to a North Division win at Wapello

Abram Edwards scored 17 points for W-MU. Andrew Brown scored nine and Jake Edwards added eight points. Wapello's Maddox Griffin led all scorers with 26 points. He had nine field goals, three from 3-point range, and he went 5-for-6 at the free throw line. Tade Parsons scored 14 for Wapello.

W-MU remains atop the North Division standings with a 13-0 mark. The Wolves are 16-1 overall. Wapello is 9-9 (8-6).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WEST BURLINGTON 48, WACO 30: The Falcons soared to a 17-2 first quarter lead and coasted to a South Division win over WACO at Wayland.

Abbey Bence led West Burlington and all scorers with 18 points on five field goals and 8-for-9 free throw shooting. Riley Richards scored seven points, Taryn Havener and Stacy Dzawo scored six each and Kenna Marlow added five points. Ellah Kissell led WACO with 10 points. Emma Wagler scored nine and Katie Leichty added five.

West Burlington (12-5, 10-4) hosts Cardinal Tuesday. WACO slipped to 8-9 (5-8).

WASHINGTON 49, BURLINGTON 9: Freshman Lauren Hinrichsen scored 14 points to lead the Demons to a Southeast Conference win at Burlington.

Washington's Alex Murphy scored eight points and Kaylin Long and Taylor Bartholomew each scored six. Sophie Brown led Burlington with six points. Alivia Wilson scored two points and Emma Rohrer added one.

Burlington (0-16, 0-7) plays at Mount Pleasant Thursday. Washington improved to 3-13 (2-7).

W-MU 62, WAPELLO 25: Three Lady Wolves scored in double figures in Winfield-Mount Union's North Division win at Wapello.

Bradie Buffington led with 13 points. Melina Oepping scored 12 points and Keely Malone added 11. Keetyn Townsley scored nine points and Jobey Malone had eight. Quinn Veach led Wapello with eight points, Tatum Wolford scored seven and Serah Shafer added five.

W-MU improved to 15-3 (12-2); Wapello is 9-9 (7-8).

HIGHLAND 64, COLUMBUS 35: The Huskies cruised to a North Division win at Columbus Junction.

Highland's Sarah Burton led the way with 21 points. Dani Laughlin scored 16 and Abigail Stransky had 15. Laughlin scored four 3-pointers and Stransky connected on three. Lily Coil led Columbus with eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Frannie Sosa also scored eight points. Libby White scored seven points, Ariana Vergara had six and Sara Vela finished with four points and five assists. Sosa had two 3-pointers.

Highland improved to 9-9 (8-6); Columbus is 3-15 (2-12),

NO. 11 KEOKUK 85, MOUNT PLEASANT 79: Abby Wolter and Kayde Martin combined for 58 points to lead 11th-ranked (Class 4A) Keokuk to a Southeast Conference win at Mount Pleasant.

Wolter scored 30 points and Martin had 28. Teammate Makayla Altgilbers scored 19 points for the Chiefs. Mount Pleasant's Andrea Lopreato claimed game honors with 31 points on 10 field goals and 11-for-15 free throw shooting. The Panthers' Jadan Brumbaugh scored 17 points. Kenna Lamm and Kate Schimmelpfennig each scored 10 points.

Keokuk is now 13-3 (9-0); Mount Pleasant is 8-9 (3-5).
