A 34-year-old man walking on Highway 18 suffered fatal injuries during a traffic collision on Thursday near the Mojave River Bridge in Victorville.

The man’s death was the second pedestrian fatality reported in less than two weeks near the bridge that connects Apple Valley and Victorville

The Victorville Sheriff’s Station reported that at 2:27 a.m. on Thursday, deputies responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision in the area of Stoddard Wells Road and Hwy. 18.

American Medical Response and the Victorville Fire Department also responded to the incident.

First responders discovered that the pedestrian had suffered major injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, sheriff’s officials said.

The occupants of the involved vehicle, a Nissan Altima, were not injured.

Deputies with the Victorville Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team responded and assumed the investigation.

It was determined that the pedestrian was walking in the No 1, westbound lane of Hwy. 18 when he was struck by the Nissan, according to authorities.

The driver and a witness remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The name of the pedestrian is being withheld pending next of kin notification by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner’s Division.

Woman fatally struck

Deputies at 7:25 a.m. on Aug. 30 responded to the report of a pedestrian traffic collision that occurred near the intersection of D and Eleventh streets, west of Stoddard Wells Road, sheriff's officials said.

Victorville Fire Department and American Medical Response personnel also responded to the incident near Hwy. 18 and the Mojave River Bridge.

Upon arrival, first responders discovered and pronounced deceased a 26-year-old Hispanic woman.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement officials.

The Major Accident Investigation Team discovered that the woman was struck by a vehicle in the eastbound, No. 1 lane of D Street when she attempted to cross the roadway.

Alcohol, drugs, vehicle speed and reckless driving were not factors in the collision, sheriff's officials said.

The identity of the deceased woman has not been released by the coroner’s division.

The investigation into the Sept. 8 collision is ongoing. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked by the sheriff’s department to contact Deputy J. Mata or Deputy B. Moreland at the Victorville Sheriff’s Station at 760-241-2911.
