Second-half surge carries Grand Canyon past Abilene Christian women in basketball

PHOENIX – Olivia Lane and Tiarra Brown combined for 25 points to lead Grand Canyon past Abilene Christian 68-59 in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at GCU Arena.

Lane had a team-high 13 points, while Brown followed with 12 as the Lopes (15-6 overall, 7-3 WAC) snapped a two-game skid.

Aspen Thornton, who missed the previous game with an injury, led ACU (10-10, 4-5) with a game-high 14 points. Maleeah Langstaff added 11, while Addison Martin had 10 and a game-high 10 rebounds. Madi Miller also had 10 points.

ACU led 36-34 at halftime, but Grand Canyon outscored the Wildcats 21-9 in the third quarter and held on for the victory.

Grand Canyon, which leads the conference in 3-point percentage defense, didn’t allow a trey on five attempts in the second half, after ACU hit 8 of 16 in the first half.

The Wildcats, who have lost two consecutive games, play Utah Valley (4-16, 1-8) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Moody Coliseum before playing second-place Stephen F. Austin (17-4, 7-2) on Saturday at Moody.
