Sebastian man dies in motorcycle crash with tow truck on U.S. 1

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 31-year-old Sebastian man died in a crash on U.S. 1 after his motorcycle struck a tow truck south of Sebastian, highway officials said.

Florida Highway Patrol did not name the man, but a spokesperson said he was riding a 2016 Kawasaki Ninja 650 when he struck the rear of a flat bed 2008 Ford F-450 shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The crash occurred at the intersection of 99th Street, or Vickers Road, and U.S. 1 just outside Sebastian city limits, according to a report.

The truck was traveling east from 99th Street toward northbound U.S. 1 crossing the lanes of the highway, the report states, when the southbound motorcycle struck its rear, or flatbed portion.

The motorcycle came to a stop in the intersection, while the tow truck pulled off the east shoulder of the northbound lanes, according to investigators.

The Sebastian man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Indian River County Sheriff's Office reported that all lanes of U.S. 1 were closed between Schumann Drive and Barber Street, or roughly 1.5 miles, during the investigation Tuesday night.

Satellite images show a stop sign at the intersection of 99th Street and the divided four-lane highway.

The report states the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet, and that the crash remains under investigation by highway officials.
