Nebraska running back Maurice Washington is not with the team and coach Scott Frost said Thursday that Washington will have to show that he can earn the trust back of his teammates and coaches if he wants to return.
Washington has been playing in 2019 despite facing a felony charge of child pornography possession in California that stems from when Washington was in high school. But Frost said earlier in the week that Washington was not on the team for a rules violation — a violation unrelated to the charges he’s facing. In addition to the California court case, Washington was also cited for marijuana possession in June. He has not practiced since Nebraska lost to Minnesota. The Cornhuskers were off on Oct. 19.
“Maurice and I are going to have another conversation,” Frost said Thursday. “I think if he does want to come back there’s going to be a lot of things he needs to do to earn his team’s trust back and our trust back and we’ll see where it goes from there.”
Washington has 50 carries for 298 yards and a touchdown and 12 catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore is Nebraska’s third-leading rusher and got his first carries of the season in the third quarter of Nebraska’s season-opening win over South Alabama.
Washington was charged in February
Washington turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued in February. He’s facing two charges — a felony and a misdemeanor — for allegedly possessing and distributing a video of a girl he dated in high school performing a sex act on someone else. The girl was 15 when the video was recorded.
His court case has been delayed throughout the 2019 season and continued multiple times. The next hearing is set for December after the completion of the regular season.
Nebraska plays Indiana on Saturday. Frost said he had an idea about his starting quarterback but wouldn’t reveal it. QB Adrian Martinez missed the Minnesota game after suffering a knee injury against Northwestern on Oct. 5.
