Wales have been warned that they have a “major psychological blow” to overcome before heading to Murrayfield on Saturday after Wales failed to capitalize on the “Warren Gatland effect” at the weekend.

The 34-10 reversal against Ireland was the country’s worst defeat in the Six Nations in 22 years and the largest Gatland has suffered in the championship.

It was the returning Kiwi’s first match in charge for more than three years and, although he put on a brave face, saying he “wasn’t that disappointed with the performance”, the reaction in Wales was negative after their side conceded 27 points in the first 27 minutes.

With the coach who led the Welsh to three Grand Slams and four Six Nations titles back at the helm there was great excitement that he could return them to past glories after a woeful 2022, but now Tom Shanklin believes the nation and the squad must come to terms with the fact that Gatland could not provide the miracle quick fix.

“Psychologically I think this is a massive blow for Wales,” Shanklin, the 70-times capped international, said. “Everyone was talking about ‘Warren Gatland’s back’, the ‘Gatland effect’, everyone coming into this quietly confident. Obviously Wales weren’t the favourites, but I thought we would have offered more. We were nowhere near the physical standard we need to be.”

Gatland's men are prepared for a torrid Monday debrief, regardless of their success in halting the procession and launching a minor comeback in the second half.

"We are going to criticise ourselves really hard,” Rio Dyer said. “We wil probably be reviewing the game non-stop. We all knew that first-half wasn't good enough. If we carried on playing the same way, teams like that could easily put 60 points on you.”
