SAULT STE. MARIE — The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians concluded their general election on June 23 and released the unofficial results, electing six new members to the board of directors.

The Sault Tribe organizes tribal members in the Upper Peninsula into five units based on where they live. The board of directors is made up of 12 people representing those five units. There are five board members from Unit 1, one board member represents Unit 5 and two board members represent each other unit.

Vice chair DJ Hoffman from Unit 1, treasurer Keith Massaway from Unit 3, Denise Chase from Unit 4 and Charles Matson from Unit 5 all ran for reelection and lost in the general election. Catherine Hollowell from Unit 2 did not seek reelection and stepped down from the board.

The winners of this election that will be joining the board of directors, according to the unofficial results, are Kimberly Lee in Unit 2, Shawn Borowicz in Unit 3, Kimberly Hampton in Unit 4 and Tyler LaPlaunt in Unit 5.

Unit 1 candidates Nichole Causley and Isaac McKechnie tied in votes. If there is still not a winner after a recount of votes then the winner will be chosen by a drawing of straws.
