Sault High soccer team to host cancer awareness game for Rob Roos

SAULT STE. MARIE — On Saturday, Oct. 1, the Sault High Blue Devils soccer team is hosting a cancer awareness fundraiser game during their match against the visiting Escanaba Bayside team.

Proceeds from the game will be donated to the family of Robert Roos, a Sault News sports reporter who died of cancer on Saturday, Sept. 24. Roos covered Sault area sports for 24 years and was a well known member of the community.

The team began planning for the cancer awareness fundraiser game in late August and wanted to use the game as a way to give back to people in need.

To prepare for the fundraiser, the team made pink shirts, socks and shoelaces to wear during the game. Many players have also prepared to speak at the game to acknowledge their own family members and loved ones who have battled cancer.

Several weeks ago, the team decided to dedicate the earnings from the fundraiser game to Roos and his family.

"We are just forever grateful for the coverage he gave us, he's provided our team," said team liaison Tracy McCord. "It was always nice for him to cover our games and give us a little bit of recognition and we greatly appreciate him for doing that."

The school has decided to waive the normal entrance fee for this game and will instead be collecting donations at the door for the Roos family.

In addition to donations, there will be a raffle during the game and the winner of the raffle will take home 50 percent of the money raised. The other 50 percent will go towards the Roos family.

The game begins at noon on Oct. 1 at AJ Van Citters Athletic Complex with the unveiling of the new pink shirts and the players speaking about their loved ones before the game begins.

"We're just hoping that we can get a good turnout and raise a lot of funds for Rob's family," said McCord.
