Apr. 18—Northfield sweeps Mayo

Despite getting solid run production, Mayo dropped a doubleheader to Northfield in Big Nine Conference baseball on Saturday.

The visiting Raiders won the first game 7-5 and outscored Mayo 16-10 in the nightcap.

"We made too many mistakes defensively all day and you can't do that against good teams," Mayo coach Tom Senne said. "We battled back in each game, but it wasn't enough to overcome shooting ourselves in the foot. There were plenty of positives today and we will bounce back and eventually bring the boom."

Northfield took advantage of three Mayo errors to score five unearned runs in the first game.

Ian Regal hit a two-run home for Mayo in the fifth inning.

The Spartans had a whopping eight errors in the second game and allowed nine unearned runs.

Cayden Holcomb hit a grand slam in the third inning for the Spartans and he finished 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Regal went 2-for-5 with a double.

Mayo (1-3) plays at New Prague on Monday.
