Saturday's Maine college roundup: Black Bears sweep NJIT in baseball doubleheader

Apr. 11—NEWARK, N.J. — Alex McKenney tossed a two-hitter in Game 1, four Maine pitchers combined on a four-hitter in the second game, and the Black Bears collected 24 hits while earning 10-1 and 14-2 victories Saturday against New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Maine (11-8, 7-5 America East) opened the doubleheader with four runs in the top of the first inning, and Jake Marquez hit a three-run double in the third to make it 7-1. Shawn Lawlor and Colby Emmertz each had two RBI.

Lawlor added three RBI in Game 2. Quinn McDaniel also drove home three runs.

NJIT dropped to 7-15 overall, 6-10 in America East.

ST. JOSEPH'S SWEEPS LASELL: Drew Healey singled home the go-ahead run during a six-run rally in the sixth inning as St. Joseph's (11-9, 2-0 GNAC) earned an 8-6 win over Lasell (4-12, 3-3) in the first game of a doubleheader in Lynn, Massachusetts.

Ben Gravel added a two-run double to help the Monks erase a 6-1 deficit.

In Game 2, Healey and Luke Stephens each had two hits and an RBI in a 5-3 victory.

SOUTHERN MAINE SPLITS: Thomas Vesosky homered in the bottom of the ninth inning as Southern Maine (11-6, 3-3 Little East) salvaged a doubleheader split against Western Connecticut State (1-3, 1-3) with a 7-6 victory, and losing 9-6 in the opener at Danbury, Conn.

Arlo Pike also homered and drove in two runs for USM in Game 2 as the Huskies, playing as the home team, rallied from a 6-4 deficit in the final two innings. Bryce Afthim (3-0) got the win in relief, allowing just two hits and an unearned run while striking out seven in five innings.

Cam Seymour had a home run and three RBI in Game 1, while Pike, Sam Troiano, Andrew Olszak and Jonathan Wilson each contributed three hits.

TUFTS SWEEPS COLBY: The Jumbos (2-0) got home runs from Matt Reid and Brandon Bay in Game 1 and from Kyle Cortese in Game 2 while shutting out the Mules (5-3) twice in Medford, Massachusetts, winning 4-0 and 10-0.

Colby was held to two hits in the opener. Andrew Russell had two of the Mules' six hits in the second game.

SOFTBALL

MAINE SPLITS WITH HARTFORD: Kelby Drews doubled home two runs during a four-run first inning that sent Maine (5-12) on its way to a 5-2 win in a doubleheader opener against Hartford (3-4) in Orono.

Keely Clark added an RBI double in the first inning. Izzy Nieblas and Emma Larke each singled home a run, and Kyleigh O'Donnell pitched a six-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Emma Armstrong launched a pair of three-run homers to lead Hartford to a 10-1 win in Game 2.

AMHERST SWEEPS BOWDOIN: The Polar Bears opened their season with 5-4 and 10-2 losses to the Mammoths (5-0) in Amherst, Mass.

In the opener, Katryna Dukehart homered in the first inning and Caroline Sublone hit a two-run single in the fourth, but Bowdoin couldn't complete a comeback from a 5-1 deficit.

Lily Armstrong drove home both runs for the Polar Bears in Game 2.

TUFTS SWEEPS COLBY: Colby (2-4) was held to a total of 10 hits in 4-2 and 11-0 losses to Tufts (3-1) in Medford, Mass.

Chloe Wilcox and Hannah Masterson each drove home a run for Colby in Game 1.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

SOUTHERN MAINE 19, CASTLETON 6: Rachel Shanks scored five goals, Alex Farley added four goals and Megan Violette chipped in with three as the Huskies (3-1, 2-1 Little East) cruised past the Spartans (1-5, 0-2) in Castleton, Vermont.

Jennifer Darasz and Kiaya Gatchell chipped in with two goals apiece, help USM build an 18-0 lead.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 24, CURRY 6: Ann Chapman and Keara Dwyer scored four goals apiece as the Nor'easters (1-0, 1-0 Commonwealth Coast) cruised past the Colonels (1-4, 1-4) in Biddeford.

Casey Conwell and Kelsey Hartigan added three goals apiece for UNE, which led 16-3 at halftime. Abby McHallum and Molly Camelo each scored twice.

TUFTS 18, COLBY 12: Catherine Lawless scored five goals as the Jumbos (3-0, 3-0 NESCAC) downed the Mules (1-2, 1-2) in Waterville.

Annie Eddy netted three goals for Colby. Gianna Bruno, Robyn Pine and Grace Toner each scored twice.

MEN'S LACROSSE

CURRY 14, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 4: Jack Dacey scored five goals to power the Colonels (3-3, 2-1 Commonwealth Coast) past the Nor'easters (0-1, 0-1) at Milton, Massachusetts.

Sam Palmisano scored twice for UNE.

TUFTS 29, COLBY 11: Max Waldbaum and Bryce Adam scored five goals apiece as the Jumbos (2-0, 2-0 NESCAC) defeated the Mules (1-2, 0-2) at Medford, Massachusetts.

Charlie Lynch and Will Dodge each got two goals for Colby, which led 5-4 at the end of the first quarter.
