Saturday's HS sports highlights: Central girls hoops open season, renovated gym with a win

Tuscarawas Central Catholic opened its season with a 41-19 win over Indian Valley in an Inter-Valley Conference girls basketball crossover contest in the first game played in Central Catholic’s newly renovated gymnasium.

The Saints jumped out to a 12-4 lead after the first period and never looked back. They led 23-8 at the half and 32-10 after three quarters.

Central’s Maddie Ferrell led all scorers with 13 points Megan Peltz added nine while Reese Triplett chipped in with eight – all in the first half. Gina Sciarretti, the Saints’ lone senior, grabbed 10 rebounds. Triplett dished out seven assists.

The Braves won the two-quarter JV game 19-6.

Hiland 43, Toledo Christian 30

Hiland head coach Jason Mishler earned his first win as the Hawks won at Toledo Christian.

Aila Miller and Ashley Mullet paced Hiland with 11 points, while Mallory Stutzman was next with eight for the Hawks (1-1).

Strasburg 50, Caldwell 39

Strasburg picked up a non-conference win at Caldwell to improve to 2-1.

The Tigers had two players with double figures scoring and two players with double figures rebounding.

Caldwell led 13-11 after one quarter and 23-19 at the half, but Strasburg took a 36-33 edge into the fourth quarter where the Tigers pulled away for the win.

Claymont 50, Malvern 43

Bailey Eddleman scored 13 points and Emma Woodward added 12 to lead Claymont to a road win at Malvern.

The Mustangs led 11-7 after one quarter, but the Hornets pulled into a 22-22 tie at the half. Claymont took a 34-26 lead into the final frame.

Raechelle Miles was next in scoring for Claymont with nine points.

Maddie Powers paced Malvern with a game-high 18 points. Emma Debo and Lanie Bower each added nine for the Hornets.

Garaway 45, East Canton 27

Rylee Putt put in 16 points as visiting Garaway picked up a Inter-Valley Conference crossover win at East Canton.

Makayla Sitzler was next in scoring for Garaway with eight.

The Pirates led 9-5 after one quarter, 24-15 at the half and 41-23 going to the fourth quarter.

Audrey Wade led East Canton with 10 points.

Garaway won the JV game 31-15.

Warren Local 46, Dover 43

Visiting Warren Local rallied from 14 points down in the third quarter for an East Central Ohio League win at Dover.

Warren Local trailed 35-21 before closing to within 35-31 heading to the final frame where it outscored the hosts 15-8 to pull out the win.

Alex Frazee, who led the winners (2-1, 1-0) with 17 points, and Abbie Smith, who added 16, each canned two free throws late to give Warren a three-point lead. Dover had a chance to send the game to overtime but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Tori Jones led Dover (0-2, 0-1) with 16 points and Morgan Kiser added 12.

Dover won the rebounding battle 23-21 as Taryn Shankle grabbed seven caroms, but turned the ball over 19 times.

Warren won the JV contest 28-24.

New Lexington 58, River View 23

Host New Lexington raced out to a 28-2 lead through the first quarter and never looked back in a rout of River View in a Muskingum Valley League crossover.

Aubri Spicer poured in 27 points to pace the Panthers (3-1, 1-0), who led 43-9 at the half and started the running clock in the second half.

Kim Kellogg chipped in 10 points, Abby Wilson added eight and Lydia Stephens put in seven for New Lex, while Aaliyah Better had 10 points to pace River View (1-2, 0-1 MVL).

Medina 49, West Holmes 24

Visiting Medina recorded a non-conference win over West Holmes in The Dungeon.

Medina led 13-2 after one quarter of play, 18-6 at the half and 37-16 going to the final quarter.

Ella McMillen led West Holmes with nine points and Claire Reynolds added six, while Allie McMillen posted three points and four steals.

Boys basketball

Claymont 62, Carrollton 60

Graydon Mooneyham fired in 22 points and Connor Lynch added 13 as Claymont rallied for a non-conference win at Carrollton.

Carrollton led 16-6 after the first quarter and was up 31-20 at the half before Claymont closed to within 34-30 at the end of three quarters and outscored the hosts 22-16 in the final frame to pull out the win.

Darick Miller had a double double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead Carrolton, while Lincoln Mallarnee scored 16 and Cadyn Smith put in 11.

The Claymont JV team won 49-36.

Union Local 49, Harrison Central 35

Host Union Local posted a win over Harrison Central.

The Jets led 9-6 after one quarter, 20-13 at the half and 34-32 going to the final frame where the hosts pulled away for the win.

The Harrison Central JV team won 31-29.
