Sara DeVries: Make connections at local library events

I moved to Holland when I was 27, fresh out of graduate school and ready to replace my hectic life of three jobs, plus classes, plus commutes, with one professional position in a walkable college town.

It was glorious for a few weeks. Then it became lonely. Holland can be a tough place to meet people compared to the experiences I had living in bigger cities. Thanks to faith communities, coworkers, and Holland Young Professionals, I found my people — but it took a few months.

From time to time, I hear young adults say they still struggle to find places to engage and things to do, especially if they're not people who frequent breweries, bars or churches.

In the next few months, Herrick District Library is offering several events that my 27-year-old self would have loved.

In late October, a spooky campfire stories open-mic-style event is scheduled at Herrick's North Branch. National Novel Writing Month kicks off in November, with a celebration offering advice from published authors, games, raffles and prizes. The North Branch will host a trivia night with a mythology theme. Both HDL locations will offer murder mystery parties.

These events are great opportunities to meet others for people of every age. I am 45 and plan to attend one or two myself. Ready to make a few new friends? Break outside your comfort zone and head over to the library.
