Santa Ynez rolls past Channel Islands 47-7

Oct. 23—Santa Ynez kept rolling Friday night, routing Ventura Channel Islands 47-7 in a Pacific View League game.

The Pirates are now 7-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Pacific View League. They close out the season against San Marcos Friday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Ventura Buena all but wrapped up the league championship with a win over Ventura Friday night. Buena (4-0 Pac. View) closes out the season next week against winless Cabrillo. Buena beat Ventura 29-28 last week. The league championship appears to have been decided by Buena's 25-19 win over Santa Ynez this year.

If Cabrillo, which hasn't won a game since 2017 and is riding a 34-game losing streak, somehow beats Buena Friday in the season finale, it would give Santa Ynez a share of the league title. A COVID-19 cancellation from Buena could also affect the league title chase.

Buena edged Santa Ynez with its last-second touchdown on Oct. 8.

In the win over Channel Islands on Friday, junior quarterback Luke Gildred completed 8 of 10 passes for 136 yards. He threw a 38-yard touchdown to Canyon McClurg, a 22-yard score to sophomore Daulton Beard and a third touchdown to Owen Hunt.

Gildred also had a 66-yard rushing touchdown and finished the game with 100 yards on five carries.

Cash McClurg, a senior, had eight carries for 53 yards and a touchdown. He also had a tackle for a safety.

Nwar Samaan finished with 45 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Beard finished with three catches for 65 yards.

Isaac Moran had 14 tackles to lead the Santa Ynez defense. The junior also had three tackles-for-loss. Senior Mikey Gills added 11 tackles and Tanner Padfield had eight tackles and two TFLs. Aidan Scott chipped in with eight tackles and 1.5 TFLs. Cash McClurg finished with three TFLs and four total tackles.

Brandon Welby and Scott each had 1.5 sacks while Moran and Jose Gonzalez each added a sack. Junior Cole Swain broke up two passes.

Senior kicker Leo Valencia sent six of his eight kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks. He went 6 for 6 on point after tries and hit a 25-yard field goal for the Pirates to finish the night with nine points.

Channel Islands finished with fewer than 200 yards of offense. Quarterback Jiovannie Ortiz went 5 for 10 for 27 yards and Juan Ramos led the rushing attack for the Raiders with 137 yards on 16 carries with the lone touchdown for his team.

San Marcos is 4-5 on the season and 2-2 in league. The Pirates will learn of their playoff fate on Sunday when the CIF Southern Section releases its playoff groupings. The brackets are set to be released at 10 a.m.

A win on Friday would secure the Pirates' second-place finish and an automatic playoff berth. Ventura and San Marcos are both 2-2 in league.
