Lads and lassies, the Fraser clan is about to face their biggest adventure yet — 16 episodes of it, in fact.

Outlander season 6 episodes premiered earlier this year, effectively ending its two-year dry period (or "Droughtlander" as fans affectionately dubbed it). The Starz historical drama based on Diana Gabaldon's ongoing book series last left our main characters in quite the peril: Claire (Caitriona Balfe)'s in prison, wrongfully accused of murdering Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds) à la witchcraft. Jamie (Sam Heughan)'s racing to find her, and audiences were left wondering if she'll hang for the crime.

Now, with season 6 over, fans are already looking ahead to its next "mega-sized" season, especially with the gold nuggets of Outlander season 7 filming sneak peeks. There's still so much untold for the Sassenach and the Highlander, so keep reading for all we know about the Outlander season 7 release date, spoilers, cast, filming locations and more:

Will there be a season 7 of Outlander?

Aye! Fans will be happy to know that its next chapter is on the horizon. Outlander will travel back to Scotland's beautiful countryside for filming. Starz officially announced Outlander was renewed for another season in March 2021.

Shortly after, in early April, Sam Heughan tweeted season 7 cast photos, revealing that Outlander is officially in production. "Wait!!! Is that @Outlander_STARZ season…. 7!?!?!? yazzz," he tweeted, flanked by Catriona, Sophie and Richard Rankin.

When is Outlander season 7 coming out?

It's too early to start the countdown, but Deadline reported that we can expect Outlander season 7 episode 1 to premiere as soon as "late 2022/early 2023." But in May, executive producer Maril Davis said she doesn't know the Outlander season 7 release date.

"I haven't been told when we will be airing season seven, all I know is we are at the beginning of shooting it now, and that's all I can say," she told Digital Spy. "I think we are on a fairly typical schedule, but it is a supersized season."

Though there's no Outlander season 7 trailer out yet, STARZ dropped a behind-the-scenes look at production last month on YouTube. As the cast celebrated World Outlander Day, they took the opportunity to share their excitement and gratitude with viewers, including Sophie Skelton who said, "We are here working hard for you on what is, I think, my favorite season yet." Richard Rankin added, "I absolutely agree."

Is Outlander season 7 the last?

With at least two more books to be adapted, Caitriona recently told Vanity Fair she’s uncertain when the series will end, but she could envision it being a full circle moment.

“We will have hit the almost 10-year mark by the end of that, which feels like a nice kind of time frame, but we don’t know," she told the outlet. "Those decisions are far above my pay grade.”

Well, at least we can count on a massive season ahead!

How many episodes will there be in Outlander season 7?

The pandemic-shortened season 6 ended at eight episodes, but dinna fash, we can confirm 16 Outlander season 7 episodes ahead.

"We just tried our best to keep everyone safe so we could continue to tell the kind of stories we wanted," Maril told Entertainment Tonight. "Our production really did an amazing job ... We condensed season 6 and got all the good material in there. And then we're going to give you a supersized season 7, which will present its own challenges."

Fortunately, Matthew B. Roberts, Outlander showrunner, writer and executive producer won't torture you with the wait. He told Variety, “Scotland will again be our production home as the Frasers and MacKenzies try to make a home against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War. This season promises more adventure, time travel and emotional peril than any season before.”

Though there are still a few loose ends to tie up from season 6's book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, season 7 will follow its original material An Echo in the Bone. Those who read the series know that Jamie and Claire must draw battle lines as the time-traveling couple keeps one foot in America and one foot in Scotland.

Meanwhile, their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her husband Roger (Richard Rankin) return to the twentieth century in Lallybroch, but they get their own visitor from the past, William Buccleigh MacKenzie (Graham McTavish), according to Vulture. You know, the secret son of Dougal MacKenzie and Geillis Duncan and also Roger's ancestor who attempted to hang him ... phew.

"This is our biggest season yet. We have so many storylines. So many different places. The trajectory — we cover so much terrain," Maril told Entertainment Weekly. "I really feel sorry for our production designer, art department, costume designer and her team. It's such a huge season. We almost can't wrap our arms around it. It's not only the extra four episodes, it's just, the Revolution is here. It's going to be really exciting."

Who will be in the Outlander season 7 cast?

As Jamie and Claire's saga continues through the Revolutionary War, we're bound to meet a slew of new cast members along the way, as they cross paths with historical figures like Benjamin Franklin and Benedict Arnold. We're still waiting for the official lineup, but we can confirm that the main cast will reprise their roles:

  • Caitriona Balfe as Claire

  • Sam Heughan as Jamie

  • Sophie Skelton as Brianna

  • Richard Rankin as Roger

  • John Bell as Young Ian

  • Mark Lewis Jones as Tom Christie

A sibling duo makes their entrance next season with the casting of Izzy Meikle-Small as Rachel Hunter and Joey Phillips as Dr. Denzell Hunter. In a recent clip posted by Outlander's YouTube in August, the pair appeared in full colonial garb (bonnet, included).

"Denzell has a real urge to join the Continental Army and serve as a surgeon because he believes that liberty is a gift from God," Joey spilled about his role. "That, then, starts their journey as Rachel comes with me." Izzy adds that her character's forced to follow, with nowhere else to go. "She's a bit more conflicted though," the actress explained. "She just has to go."

Remaining faithful to the books, these two new characters are Quakers whose quiet farm life is changed when Young Ian arrives with a sick and injured William Ransom, igniting a love triangle between the two and Rachel.

That's right — book devotees will spot a familiar character rejoining the ranks. Outlander's official Instagram announced that Charles Vandervaart is playing the role of William Ransom, who is Jamie's secret son. Remember him from season 4? Though just a child then, a now adult William finds himself in Wilmington joining the British Army to extinguish conflict in the American colonies.

When William's mother Geneva Dunsany and his supposed father, Ludovic Ransom, died, Lord John Grey (David Berry) and his wife Isobel, who was Geneva’s sister, took him in. He's completely unaware of his true bloodline, which adds another layer of drama if revealed next season. On the surface, William is a charismatic aristocrat but with an underlying streak of his inherited Highlander fire, per Variety.
