Salem gives magic advice in exclusive Sabrina the Teenage Witch comic preview

Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina put a new spin on everyone’s favorite teenage witch, depicting a world where the magic of young Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) isn’t just playful, but hurtful and demonic. One of the trade-offs in this tonal shift involved Sabrina’s memorable black cat familiar, Salem, who does not speak in the Netflix version. But rest assured, Salem can definitely talk in the new Sabrina the Teenage Witch comic series launching this week from Archie Comics — as you can see in the exclusive excerpt below.

As previously revealed by EW, this new Sabrina the Teenage Witch comic is written by Kelly Thompson (Hawkeye, Captain Marvel). It is illustrated by Veronica Fish and Andy Fish, and lettered by Jack Morelli.

“We’ve got big shoes to fill between the TV show and the beloved new series, not to mention the original comics and the ’90’s show!” Thompson tells EW in a statement. “But I hope we’ve carved out an interesting little space for ourselves that will be recognizable to fans but also bring something new to the character.”

As seen here, Sabrina’s magic has both light and dark sides: It can change her hair to a more common teen blonde, or it can manifest scary nightmare monsters. That’s probably why Salem is trying to convince her to be careful with it, albeit with limited success.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch #1 hits stores Wednesday. Check out an exclusive preview below.
