Sabrina Ionescu wins AP player of the year award by unanimous vote

Of all the stars in NCAA women’s basketball this season, one shone more brightly than the rest. Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu was named the AP women’s college basketball player of the year Monday. No other player received serious consideration for the award, as Ionescu won it unanimously.

Ionescu, 22, was a dominant force on the court this season. She averaged 17.5 points, 9.1 assists and 8.6 rebounds in 33 games, and helped lead Oregon to a 31-2 record. The team finished the season ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, behind South Carolina.

Ionescu reached a number of milestones during her tenure with Oregon. In February, Ionescu became the first player in college basketball history to reach 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists. That same night, Ionescu notched her 26th career triple-double, extending her NCAA record.

The end of Ionescu’s tenure at Oregon will go down as one of sports’ greatest what-ifs. Oregon ended the year on a 19-game winning streak, and was set to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA women’s tournament before the tournament was canceled amid concerns over the coronavirus. Because of that, Ionescu was robbed of a chance to deliver a national championship to Oregon in her final season with the team.

Ionescu spoke about the disappointing end to her senior year, saying she was “saddened,” but completely understood why the NCAA decided to cancel the event.

With her college career officially over, Ionescu will take her talents to the WNBA. She’s expected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft, which is still slated to take place April 17.
