Russia Carries Out Ballistic Missile Test at Sea During Military Exercise

Russia on October 26 tested a Sineva submarine-launched ballistic missile from a vessel in the northern Barents Sea, the Kremlin said.

The nuclear-capable missile was launched from the submarine Tula (К-114), the Kremlin said, releasing video of President Vladimir Putin observing the test remotely from Moscow. The launch was conducted by the Northern Fleet, it said.

Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu said the exercise was practice for a retaliatory nuclear strike, state media reported. Similar tests have been carried out annually in October since 2013.

Russia announced the test the previous day. Moscow last conducted a strategic missile test in mid-February, days before invading Ukraine.

In addition to the Sineva, Russian forces also test-fired a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile at the Plesetsk state test cosmodrome in the northwestern Arkhangelsk Oblast, the Kremlin said.
