Russell Crowe has apparently let slip that he will be playing Zeus in the forthcoming film, Thor: Love and Thunder.

The actor had already confirmed that he would be joining the project but had yet to reveal the identity of his character.

Speaking to the JOY Breakfast radio station, however, he concluded his interview with the casually dropped revelation: “I’m going to get on my bicycle and ride up to Disney-Fox studios, and I’m gonna get the hot tongs out, and around 9.15, I shall be Zeus.”

If any doubt remained, he then added: “It's for Thor. It's my last day of Zeus-ing about and I'm going to enjoy it,” he added.

Some outlets reporting the news questioned whether Marvel would be frustrated that Crowe, like his fellow Marvel stars Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland, had shared more information than they’d like ahead of time.

However, many fans had already guessed Crowe’s character, and celebrated on social media.

“I might cry I’m so happy,” one fan wrote.

“Russell Crowe is perfect for Zeus!” another tweeted.

“Russell Crowe as Zeus in a Taika Waititi Thor film makes so much sense. It's the most perfect thing ever and we haven't even seen a frame of footage,” one fan commented.

In the comics, Zeus the Olympian frequently intervenes in Thor’s battles with Hercules.

Crowe will be acting opposite Thor star Chris Hemsworth, plus Natalie Portman, the Guardians of the Galaxy cast, and Christian Bale, who signed on to play the evil Gorr, The God Butcher.

Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled for release on 6 May 2022.
