Portsmouth Invitational

The Waverly boys' golf team claimed first place at the Portsmouth Invitational at Elks Country Club on Thursday amid a field of 19 teams. The Tigers posted a team score of 330, and they beat out second-place Fairland by one stroke. Ben Nichols and Zander King tied for the team best after they each recorded a score of 76. The pair fell just short of the lowest scores of the day, as they were beaten out by South Webster's Owen Malt, who posted a 71.

Piketon and Zane Trace were also among the other teams that competed in the invitational. The Redstreaks placed seventh overall with a team score of 351, and they were led by Owen Armstrong's score of 83. The Pioneers ended the day with a 15th place finish after posting a team score of 392. Henry Zitzelberger posted the team low with a score of 93.

The Tigers picked up a big win in a hotly-contested invitational, and they have little turnover time before their next match. They will return to Elks Country Club on Aug. 15 for a tri-match against Portsmouth West and Minford.

JAYCEES BOYS TRI-MATCH

The Chillicothe Cavaliers Boys' Golf team picked up an impressive win on Friday after beating out Unioto and Hillsboro in a tri-match at Jaycees Golf Course on Friday.

The Cavaliers posted a combined team score of 177, and they beat out Unioto for first place by six strokes. Match medalist Aidan Fischer posted the team low of 38, while teammate Kaiden Koch ended the day with a 39.

GIRL'S TENNIS

Chillicothe 3, Washington Court House 2: The Chillicothe Cavaliers girls' tennis team started its season off on the right foot with a 3-2 victory over Washington Court House on Thursday.

The Cavaliers dominated the singles matches, with Bella Flores, Haley Laughlin and Avery Miller all winning their matches in two sets. Both Flores and Laughlin shut out their opponents, and won all of their sets 6-0. Miller struggled just a bit more, and she won her first set 6-2 before ending the match with a 6-0 shutout set.

However, the Cavaliers struggled during the doubles matches. The pairing of Jacey Harding and Taysia Yusuf lost in two sets to Washington Court House's Abby Wilson and Tristan Hannock (6-2, 7-5). Kynze Bayes and Keyera Hatfield faired no better, and they lost their match to Washington Court House's Kate Bailey and Abby Rose (6-4, 6-0).

Still, the Cavaliers won the day. They've got a 1-0 record in the Frontier Athletic Conference, and they have a chance to keep that hot start roaring. They will travel to face Miami Trace on Aug. 16.
