Roundup: Utica’s Dickson, Newark Catholic qualify for OHSAA district girls golf

Olivia Dickson fired an 83 for the Utica girls golf team at Blacklick Woods on Monday to place third during the Division II sectional tournament.

Dickson qualified for next week’s district tournament at Darby Creek as did the Newark Catholic team.

The Green Wave totaled 378 to take runner-up behind Columbus Academy’s 324. Sam Spearman’s 91 led NC, and she was followed close behind by teammates Alli Doehring and Caylee Lattimer at 95 apiece and Natalie Holsky 97.

Utica’s Brooklyn Fender added a 92, falling just short of qualification.

BOYS GOLF

Newark beats Canal

Mitch Bolte shot 38 at the Trout Club to lead Newark to a victory against Canal Winchester, 171-177.

Ryan Wamer and Roman Green added 44s and Griffin Richards 45.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lakewood blanks New Lex

Lakewood scored a goal in each half, beating visiting New Lexington 2-0.

Jaylie Maas scored in the first half, and Brea Ballard scored off an Ellie Conaway assist in the second. McKenna Clem made four saves for the Lancers (4-2-4).

Johnstown wins on road

Madison McKee recorded two goals and an assist for Johnstown in a 4-1 victory at Amanda-Clearcreek.

Abby Ruffle and Cameron Goddard added a goal and an assist apiece and Emma Kisner an assist. Hailey Hill made 15 saves for the Johnnies (3-4-4).

Valley ties

Malakiha Bunn made 16 saves for Licking Valley in a 3-3 tie at Tri-Valley.

Avery Williams scored twice for the Panthers (5-3-2). Isabella Reynard added a goal, and Emma Cubbison and Olivia Wells had an assist apiece.

Newark falls at home

Newark fell into a 3-0 hole Saturday in a 5-2 defeat to visiting Big Walnut.

Zoey Milton scored both goals off assists from Ali Farnsworth. Faith Young made six saves for the Wildcats (3-8-2).

VOLLEYBALL

NC cruises

Ava Gummer piled up 19 kills and 15 digs in Newark Catholic's sweep at Fredericktown, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22.

Sophie Peloquin added eight kills and three blocks and Kylie Gibson 29 assists and 14 digs for the Green Wave (14-2).

Adelman sets mark

Elise Adelman's five aces gave her a Watkins Memorial all-time record 175 as the Warriors (12-4) beat visiting New Albany, 25-9, 25-18, 25-18.

Murphy Boyd added 12 kills, Adelman seven kills and 29 assists, McKayla Jellison seven kills and Mya Jackson 12 digs.

Lakewood falls

Audrey Thomas totaled four aces and 17 digs for Lakewood in a loss to Fairfield Christian, 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18.

Charlee Palmer added 12 kills, Abi Miller 10 kills and eight aces and Kenna Parkison seven kills and 34 assists for the Lancers (3-11).

GIRLS TENNIS

Newark wins

Becca Helber and Andy Hupp rallied for a win at No. 1 doubles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, to cap Newark's 4-1 victory at Westerville North.

Lacey Layne and Dia Bailey, 7-6, 6-3, also won at No. 2 doubles for the Wildcats (10-8). Addi Taylert, 7-6, 6-0, and Vanessa Bennett, 6-3, 6-0, won singles matches.

CROSS COUNTRY

NC girls win title

Mary Grace Richardson ran a time of 24:07.5 to place ninth for Newark Catholic on Saturday, leading the Green Wave to the team championship during Madison Christian's Marion & Ruth Gray XC Invitational.

Violet Caton 14th (24:29.9), Therese Fullenkamp 15th (24:37.5), Maria Geiger 17th (24:50.5) and Cecelia Geiger 18th (25:07.4) followed for NC, which finished 13 points ahead of runner-up Grove City Christian.

Granville Christian's Eliana Jackson was the top area finisher, taking fourth (22:26.3), and GCA teammate Natalia Locke was 11th (24:21.3) and Liberty Christian's Rachel Mohr 12th (24:24.1).

Liberty Christian's Carson Crabtree ran a time of 17:32.3 to win the boys race.

Jacob Latshaw placed fourth (18:21.4) for team champion GCA, which finished five points ahead of Wellington. NC's Drew Fischer finished eighth (19:19.6), GCA's Caleb Lilly 15th (20:03.1) and Dominic Sprankle 17th (20:09.3), NC's A.J. Rigley 19th (20:12.0) and GCA's Justin Longshore 25th (20:23.2) and Ian Martin 27th (20:34.7).
